What is a Food Allergy?
Food allergy can occur not only by consuming food but also by smell or even touching it. Allergy is the body's reaction to a substance. The antigen that can cause allergic reactions is called an allergen substance. Allergy can develop against many things. The incidence of food allergies is not high. It is especially common in children. Food allergies are seen in 2 to 8% of children, while this rate is around 1% in adults. It appears to be 2% in the whole population average. Although allergy diagnoses are made in 5% of children, this problem usually disappears when they grow up. The symptoms of food allergies appear seconds after the food is consumed. These symptoms are not only manifested by redness and swelling. Sometimes severe pain occurs after a food allergy.
What are the Symptoms of Food Allergies?
- When people with allergies consume something that will cause an allergic reaction, their bodies protect themselves by making antibodies. The antibody causes the release of chemicals such as histamine. As a result of these chemicals, rapid heartbeat, itching, and red spots appear.
- Chocolate, honey, spices, vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, oilseeds, shellfish, fish, eggs, and milk may contain allergens. These foods cause allergies more often than other foods.
Red patches, sweating, burning, itching, redness, rash, hives, throat swelling, facial swelling, tongue, and mouth swelling, swelling of the lips.
